To Directors, Managers, and Leadership,
As Canada faces its largest measles outbreak since the disease was declared eliminated in 1998, we want to inform—not alarm—you. Most cases are among unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown immunization status. In Manitoba, cases are rising, including school-related exposures.
Key Message: Immunization is critical. It’s our strongest defense in protecting children, families, and communities. We urge you to share this message widely with staff, parents, and clients.
About Measles:
- Highly contagious through air and direct contact
- Symptoms: high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and rash
- Can lead to severe complications: pneumonia, brain swelling, or death
Prevention:
- Two-dose MMR vaccine (12 months and 4–6 years of age)
- Hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and avoiding shared personal items
- Adults may also need vaccination—check with your health provider
Act Now:
- Review your family’s immunization status
- Help spread awareness, not the virus
- Visit gov.mb.ca/measles for updates
Measles is preventable, but it requires awareness and action. Stay informed and protect yourself and your community.
Please call Public Health to check on the vaccine status of you and your family.
