Position Title: Maternal Support Services Nurse, Public Health Department
Location: Nelson House Head Office

Job Description:

The Maternal Support Services Nurse, under the supervision of the Health Director, is responsible for delivering and coordinating client care in accordance with clinical standards, professional practice guidelines, and organizational policies. The role involves independent clinical decision-making, appropriate delegation, and collaboration within an interprofessional care team. Practice aligns with the Standards of Practice set by the applicable Manitoba nursing regulatory body, based on the nurse’s designation, competencies, and experience. The nurse provides culturally safe, trauma-informed, and family-centred care to pregnant and postpartum clients, with a focus on improving maternal and infant health outcomes. Key responsibilities include client education, advocacy, coordination of doula and birth support services, and direct nursing care. This position works closely with Public Health Nursing, Strengthening Families, Jordan’s Principle, the Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program, and other community external partners to deliver coordinated, wraparound services that support healthy pregnancies, positive birthing experiences, and early parenting.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical & Direct Client Care

• Provide nursing assessments for pregnant and postpartum clients, including physical, emotional, and psychosocial screening.
• Offer education on prenatal health, labour and birth, breastfeeding, newborn care, postpartum recovery, and family planning.
• Identify risk factors and make timely referrals to medical providers, mental health services, lactation support, public health programs, and social supports.
• Deliver culturally responsive, evidence-based maternal health interventions.
• Support clients with birth planning and informed decision-making.

Doula & Support Services Coordination

• Coordinate doula assignments and ensure continuity of care from pregnancy through postpartum.
• Provide clinical guidance to doulas regarding scope, safety, and best practices.
• Collaborate with doulas to ensure individualized, family-centred support plans.

Care Coordination & Advocacy

• Develop individualized care plans to address health, social, cultural, and environmental needs.
• Advocate for respectful, equitable care for clients within healthcare systems.
• Support clients navigating appointments, transportation, benefits, and community resources.

Education & Community Outreach

• Facilitate prenatal classes, support groups, and parenting workshops.
• Engage in outreach to connect families with maternal support services.
• Provide health promotion and prevention education in community settings.
• Mix of clinic, community, home visits, and outreach events.
• Occasional evening or weekend work for client needs or classes.

Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain accurate, timely charting in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
• Track program metrics and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
• Participate in data collection related to maternal and infant health outcomes.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

• Work collaboratively with OB/GYNs, midwives, pediatric providers, social workers, mental health staff, and community agencies.
• Attend team meetings and case conferences.
• Help develop and update maternal health protocols, educational materials, referral pathways, and processes.
• Hire and train Indigenous doulas.

Qualifications:

• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN)
• Must be registered with the appropriate regulatory body in Manitoba
• Experience in maternal-child health, public health, community health, labor & delivery, or postpartum care.
• Understanding of trauma-informed, culturally safe, and family-centred care principles.
• Strong communication, assessment, and teaching skills.
• Experience working with doulas, Indigenous communities, rural/remote populations, or birth support programs is an asset
• Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers
• Current Criminal Record Check, Child Abuse Check, & Vulnerable Sector Check
• Strong communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Knowledge of Indigenous health perspectives and community engagement is an asset.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for outreach activities.
