Program Overview
Under the supervision of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Coordinator, the FASD Mentoring Program is a paraprofessional intervention for women struggling with addictions and those living with FASD. The mentor provides practical support to prevent and reduce FASD births through one-on-one advocacy and guidance.
Key Responsibilities
Mentorship & Support
- Provide support creating healthy environments to achieve goals and maintain connections with women who may be pregnant or parenting.
- Advocate and provide emotional support throughout pregnancies.
- Assist with mentorship program planning.
- Attend the core values of the mentorship program.
- Provide emotional support during the first six months of mentoring and evaluate progress every four months.
- Assist clients in creating action plans and identifying strengths and factors that support positive change.
- Facilitate support in balancing responsibilities.
- Support clients in accessing resources and services.
- Demonstrate ability to function creatively and independently.
- Support families in facilitating newsletters and brochures.
Knowledge Requirements
- Strong communication skills in writing and oral communication.
- Teamwork is essential.
- Compassion and empathy.
- Knowledge of FASD.
- Basic counselling skills.
- Ability to record keeping and computer skills.
Qualifications
- Valid Manitoba Driver’s Licence.
- Valid CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Ability to speak an Aboriginal language is an asset.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to maintain respect and dignity toward families.
- Knowledge of community-based programming and First Nations culture.
