Program Overview

Under the supervision of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Coordinator, the FASD Mentoring Program is a paraprofessional intervention for women struggling with addictions and those living with FASD. The mentor provides practical support to prevent and reduce FASD births through one-on-one advocacy and guidance.

Key Responsibilities

Mentorship & Support

  • Provide support creating healthy environments to achieve goals and maintain connections with women who may be pregnant or parenting.
  • Advocate and provide emotional support throughout pregnancies.
  • Assist with mentorship program planning.
  • Attend the core values of the mentorship program.
  • Provide emotional support during the first six months of mentoring and evaluate progress every four months.
  • Assist clients in creating action plans and identifying strengths and factors that support positive change.
  • Facilitate support in balancing responsibilities.
  • Support clients in accessing resources and services.
  • Demonstrate ability to function creatively and independently.
  • Support families in facilitating newsletters and brochures.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Strong communication skills in writing and oral communication.
  • Teamwork is essential.
  • Compassion and empathy.
  • Knowledge of FASD.
  • Basic counselling skills.
  • Ability to record keeping and computer skills.

Qualifications

  • Valid Manitoba Driver’s Licence.
  • Valid CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to speak an Aboriginal language is an asset.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain respect and dignity toward families.
  • Knowledge of community-based programming and First Nations culture.
